Organ Buddies Book

Organ Buddies Book Cover

We often ask very young children, “Where are your eyes, your nose, your ears, and your knees?” Generally with little hesitation, children are able to immediately point to those areas of their body. Then ask a child to indicate where their liver or kidneys are, and watch the look of bewilderment on his /her face. Overall, children not only don’t know where their organs are, they also don’t know what their organs do. "My Organ Buddies Book" is a book written to help young children learn all about the solid organs of their bodies through the “Organ Buddies” characters: "Oliver the Liver, Sidney the Kidney and his twin sister, Sydney the Kidney, Bart the Heart, Pat the Pancreas , and Louie and Louise the Lungs". Children will learn where their solid organs are located, how the organs function and the importance of maintaining them with proper nutrition and exercise.

Author’s notes: This book can be used as a read aloud, independent reader or classroom instructional tool.

With My Organ Buddies, Lee and Felice Downing have written an excellent book that introduces your readers to the names and functions of their solid organs.

The alliterative names, Sydney the Kidney, Bart the Heart, Pat the Pancreas, and Louise and Louie the Lungs, will get and hold the attention of young readers as they learn the locations and functions of these organs. The authors have not overdone the information they provide. The way it is given is suitable for the age group targeted.

The book can be read aloud, used for independent reading, or as a classroom text. The authors provide additional classroom information, including a vocabulary page, a word seach activity, connect the dots, and a crossword puzzle. All these activities deal with material covered in the text.

This book would make an excellent addition to classrooms that work with young students.
